Same with Russia and Byzantium. Russians had to choose from Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Judaism but went for Orthodoxy because they were awed by the splendor and sophistication of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire.
In the 18th century, all of Europe adopted the model of the French court and royal and ducal courts spoke French. Even distant Russia and French enemies like Holland and Austria. Why? Because France was the most populous and most powerful country in Europe. Her achievements in culture and science were rivaled by none. And the splendor of Versailles awed all.
